  "A Pioneer Settler "Lars A. Lee, one of the pioneer settlers of this county, died at the home of A. A. Holtan in Canisteo on Monday, Oct. 8, 1906, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. "Deceased was born in Voss, Norway, July 29, 1825. About 1852 he was united in marriage to Ingeborg Forde and by this union six children were born, Oscar, Nels and Olena being deceased. Ole Lee, Mrs. O. O. Gordon and Mrs. A. A. Holtan are the three surviving children. "The family came to American in 1860 and settled in Illinois, where they remained for eighteen months and then removed to Jackson county, this state. In 1862 they were driven from their home by the Indians and took refuge at Decorah, Iowa, in which place they resided for a year. In '64 they came to Canisteo and it has been their home since. Mrs. Lee died twenty-three years ago. "For several years Mr. Lee has made his home with his son and daughters, and has made his home in the Holtan family for the past twenty months. A week ago Tuesday he was taken ill with dysentery and on Monday at 7:25 a.m. passed away. The funeral services were held from Mr. Holtan's home at 2 o'clock on Tuesday, with Rev. J. A. Thorsen, of Rock Dell, officiating. Interment was made at West St. Olaf church. Henry Munson, a nephew and his wife, of [Clarkfield], and Lars O. Forde, another nephew, of Hayfield, was in attendance at the funeral." --- Dodge County [MN] Republican, 11 Oct 1906
